Lt. William Henry Smith

Mr. William, popularly known as "Uncle Bill", came to India as a young 21 year old British Soldier. During his tenure with the British Army he served in many places in India and what now is Pakistan, Quetta, Baluchistan, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Bombay, Matunga, Jhansi etc. He fell in love with India and never returned to England. He studied and through Bombay University got a degree in Education. Being a qualified Engineer already he had no in getting a job in the Railways. He retired as a lecturer from Jabmalpur Engineering College.






Lt. Cecelia Rose Wells

Mrs. Cecelia Rose Wells: She was the youngest daughter of one of the oldest and richest Indigo Plantation owners. Her early schooling was completed in the Normal School Varanasi and there after the Queen Victoria College, Agra. She worked in St. Mary's Convent Varanasi, Christ Church Lucknow & Kanpur and was then appointed while posted in Unnao she met Mr. W. H. Smith. They were both in their early fifties when they met and got married. Taking premature retirement they took a missionary bungalow in Varanasi on lease from LDTA and started Smith Junior and Nursery Day School. They went house to house persuading parents to send their children to an English Medium School.
Slowly the reputation of the school grew. This school grew a formidable reputation for discipline that it maintains to this day. Also they were famous for the fact that any child who joined Smiths started conversing in English within a year. Also the value of education imparted for teaching staff consisted of only Anglo-Indian Community but over the years the teachers from every caste, creed and community found their way to the portals of Smiths. Slowly but surely the school grew in strength and now ran till class VIII. Then they slowly started sending up children for U.P. Board High School Examination. lil 1985 they applied for NOC from the U.P. Government.



Lt. Pauline Hope Sodhi

Mrs. Pauline Sodhi the daughter like niece of Mrs. & Mr. Smith was instrumental in acquiring the above with unfailing efforts of Mr. P.M. Sodhi her husband, Mrs. P. Sodhi has been managing the school committee which was registered in 1968 from its inception. With the demise of Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith changed the name of the school to W.H. Smith Memorial Inter College in his memory and applied for ICSE affiliation, which was received, and the 1stbatch of ICSE were sent up in March 1989. In 1994 after inspection we were permitted to open ISC Science & Arts but could open only Science section as there was hardly any response for Arts (Humanities) at that time. 1999 - 2000 The school now offers Accounts / Economics / Business Maths /Business Studies at 10 + 2 ISC level.
